Selling your business is a structured process that requires preparation, patience, and strategy. Understanding each stage helps you stay focused and informed.
Step 1: Find the right broker. Choose someone with proven experience, confidentiality, and integrity.
Step 2: Define the engagement. Discuss valuation, fees, and listing terms. Most businesses take around eight to nine months to sell.
Step 3: Prepare documentation. Gather financials, operational data, and a detailed profile of your business. A broker will use this to create a Confidential Information Memorandum for qualified buyers.
Step 4: Market the business. Brokers advertise strategically to attract high-quality, vetted buyers while maintaining confidentiality.
Step 5: Review offers and due diligence. Evaluate Letters of Intent and negotiate terms that protect your interests.
Step 6: Finalize the sale. Once both sides agree, legal and financial advisors finalize documents and close the deal.
Selling a business can be emotional, but with the right plan, it becomes a rewarding milestone that celebrates your success.
